Video Analysis

Hellogoodbye- Here in your arms

Hellogoodbye have gone for a unconventional video which goes away from the idea of making the star image, the band are seen to be ‘geeks’ and ‘social rejects’ rather than be worshiped by the girl in there video. As this video was the first major hit that came into the charts from the band this is where all there star image would have come from, this means that all the songs after this would just enhance the image that had already been started with them in the video for this song.

The band do not conform to the star theory that Dyer believes many bands and artists do, they are not a synthetic band to the conventional terms, they do not create a sense of rebelion or are only used for there good lucks, this is what Negus thought that synthetic bands do, unlike this Hellogoodbye give themselves a nerd look. They are not rebelious or the best looking group they base there image on innocence and niavity. This can be seen in the video with the usage of close ups at the start we see the lead singer tie the laces to his shoes and place sunglasses on his colar and a comb in his pocket, this portrays the niavity of the star and the image they are trying to put across. The use of a mid-shot on one of the other band memebers sitting on a bed whilst his friend is getting intimate with a girl next to him, showing the ‘geek’ and ‘social reject’ look towards the band. Dyer’s theory also said that a star must be ordinary yet extrodinary, for Hellogoodbye this is not the case as we feel like they are ordinary people and there is nothing special about them.

The editing used is very straigh cut and quick leaving nothing between all the different parts of the narative through out the video until the break down where the video follows the style of the music and slows down with longer clips before they cut, there is also a slow motion used. The main focus of the videos are on the girls that surposdly Hellogoodbye themselves cannot get, the video later shows that they do and can and its not all about the looks and being a synthetic boy band.
Andrew Goodwin says that different music genres have different kinds of music videos’ Hellogoodbye do not go along with this as such as the begining of the video doesnt show them as being cool or popular, however as the video goes through this becomes more apparent to as the girl begin to become interested in the members of the band, this however is not how most pop music videos go, the singer is the main focus of all the attention from the start.

The singer and the band in Hellogoodbye do not wear mainstream fashion in this video they are all dressed in short shorts and wear headbands and uncool glasses, however in doing so they create a trend that they themselves own. This has happened in other ways such as Calvin Harris' and Kanye West's sunglasses and Dappy’s from N-dubz hat, this will the associate people with the music they listen to and place them in social groups. Hebdidge called this the creation of subcultures.

The video goes with the theory of Stever Archer as it cuts often between the band performing and a narative to go along with the song creating the image, as well as showing the band performing.

The video makes you feel like part of the group/band again making them seem more ordinary than extrodinary.

Nickelback-Rockstar

Nickelback have made this video by getting clips of fans singing to there song, this is all performance with no narative to the song, this makes it simple as the editing is all straigh cut as every performer sings one line of the song, the only clips that are reapeated at the clips that are used during the chorus. The idea was originally done by Feeder they had the idea to have a video dedicated almost to all there fans and Nickelback have taken this idea and done there own spoof of it.
This means that band dont really appear in the video not creating a star image of them as only there fans are shown so Negus theory is irrelevant in this video, also Dyer’s theory on stars does not appear as the band cannot be seen there for they are not creating any real image for themselves otehr than the one they are hevily involved with there fans.

Nickelback are more of a organic band, this can be shown by the fact that they do not mind no featuring in their own videos and letting their fans appear they already have a image created as well from the many years they have already been playing, and without having them act in the video shows more on their concentration on music rather than their image like many boy bands that are synthetic. For those that are fans of Nickelback they will know that they are not synthetic as they never get carried away with the videos and are definitely not the most attractive band again showing that they are organic rather than synthetic in Negus’ theory.

The use of the fans in the video means that the band are made to look ordinary as well as extrodinary and close as well as distance as Dyer says, this makes us think we can become close to the band as some fans feature in a video, but then again as the band are not there is shows that they are not as close as we think. Dyer states that this is what makes fans buy a band's work as they are almost chasing and following the band trying to get close to them and that's what keeps them interested.
Steve Archer's theory doesn't work in this as the song has no narative so it is purely a performance by the people that have been recorded to do the clip.
