Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I used the media conventions around my genre which is dubstep, a relatively new genre having only been recognised for the nine years and being a low budget meaning there is no mainstream artists to base my video on as well as using the normal codes and conventions of any music video with things such as fast cuts no long takes, allot of extreme close ups, as well as performance I would involve a story line like many other videos.

Looking into conventions of music videos was how I found about all of these as well as the evaluation I did on some music videos. However for my genre the research was much harder as my genre was only developed and recognised in 2000 this means there are hardly any artists that use the genre and there are almost no music videos of the genre, certainly no professional music videos, this will be due to the large cost that is obviously around making videos, and looking at the genres that were used to develop dubstep, they are all low budget underground genres as well, this is what gives the genres there identity almost that they are not mainstream and made for making money, not synthetic as Negus theory states there are two kinds of stars, and the dubstep genre is for organic stars only, ones with the real interest in the music and not the money making side. Having such a niche genre allowed me to be more creative giving me less boundaries allowing me to mix with other genres, looking deeper into the genre I found that it was a rather computer orientated genre, many inspirations were drawn from games or gaming on the computer or online which lead me to develop the genre into one that revolved around gaming, and I reflected this in my final product using allot of shots of a laptop and someone playing on the laptop, trying to show the laps of time and how quickly it passes when people get fixed within a computer. Many videos are just pictures or pure performance such as Skreans video and he is known to be one of the biggest dubstep artists. Also the dubstep genre is often looked at to be a street genre, coming from street, hip hop and grime it would be expected to be like these however my artist didn't really conform to these stereotypes so I thought that my product should reflect the breaking of the stereotypes as well. My product had to relate to the genre however it would have to break the stereotypes which is a particularly hard, I had to look at some of the conventions I wished to keep and look at others that didn't matter as much that I would break to give the video its own sense of individuality. When I was looking at conventions to keep, I thought I would keep the video with mainly performance, as many of the videos that can rarely be found often are, again showing how unknown the genre is, also I thought the use of placing it around a game would be a good idea, as often this is where the inspiration can be found, as many of the artists are keen on computers, and games meaning this would be idea. Often people use clips from games to portray there videos, however I thought I would twist this and have someone on the other side of the screen, and record them playing the game.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Looking and analysing other websites and digi packs I noticed they all use things such as updates about the band to try and keep the people following the band as involved as possible this ties in with the star theory this is Dyer's theory on stars, with competitions about winning tickets and meeting the band it allows the fans to think they are close to the star whilst the star is still far away, this means the fans think it is still realistic to chase the band as if they can get to know them.

I looked to keep a general theme throughout my work this would allow them to be recognised and associated by people in the know, giving people that know about the artist a feeling of knowledge and knowing things that other people do not know, I have done this by using a different hard to read font and a logo almost that will be recognised as it is used throughout my video and digi pack as well as on my web site. As you can see on the right hand side, this is the image that created the cultural competence, as the font is hard to read for people who don't have knowledge of the artist. Also due to the low budget of the genre again most of the websites are quite basically, however most of the artists in this genres basic computer skills are often good, as they need to be good with computers as this is often there only instrument within their songs. Many are often just MySpace, facebook or twitter pages; saving money as they are all free to have you don't have to pay for the web space. More often than not its MySpace pages that are used, as they are free and can be easily manipulated by people who can type and understand HTML, which is the code used to create most things on computer, again allowing them to have good looking sites without any extra cost, which is idea due to the low budget surrounding the genre. Again showing how the genre is all based around being home made on computers. Keeping the underground side to the genre I thought I would not announce tour dates on the website, as many of the smaller artists do they will blog or send invites to fans over facebook or other social networking sites, this keeps it more personal and keeps the organic star theory. This again goes with the title Dubfiend, I used on my digi pack and in the video the text is blurred and to people that are not into the genre or know of the artist. This creates a cultural competence for those people who know of the artist.

I also used the conventional links of the homepage with everything you need to know about an artist with his Biography, access to merchandise and the latest news on the band, this gives it everything that a normal bands website would have, there are both images and text used on the homepage, text not used as much as home pages often are more images to keep the viewer on the website for longer by clicking on all the different links. However unlike a conventional website there is not one image of the performer on the website, this keeps the sense of mystery allot like dubfiend's music there is a sense of mystery, only a silhouette used.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I have learnt a lot from my audience feedback, they have helped me look at my work realistically and it's good to get an outside fair opinion about my work from what the people that would genuinely be my target audience this gave me a realistic view and told me the things that I could improve on in future. Also having a good spread of good and constructive comments allowed me to see that my music video could be improve by having a different range of shots in the which could fill out my work more and make it more interesting helping the work have more of a repeatability factor, Archer. As my music video does become so what repetitive after the first time of watching, the inspiration fitted with the genre and the music video had a good range of shots, however mainly of performance. Many of my comments mentioned about how the video fitted the genre well and fitted the music, however there were also some constructive comments about this, again lacking shots other than performance, it was hard to find something to base the video on as the song had no lyrics it made it hard.

My digi pack received mainly good comments about the fading text, however it was pointed out that some people may struggle to find the CD in some stores as the spine didn't contain any text, so when the CD cover is turned to the side it was just black, my idea to do this was to make it stand out in its self without having any text, making it stand out more than others that have text. The title was also not very clear however this was to help with the idea with you need to know about the artist to be able to read the title and recognise it again giving the cultural competence being created, it's more of a logo rather than text, this is also the same with the fluid splatter effected I used it to help recognise the artist and you will associate it with him.

My website had similar comments to my digi pack as they shared many similarities in the style as I tried to keep a theme through out to show the link between them all as is often clear, also the images used on the website would help advertise the album and digi pack. The layout was said to be good and looked good as well as being easy to use which is something that is not often found on bands websites with links everywhere it doesn't often look to good, there was a good consistent colour scheme and theme that I carried throughout all my work. And this was commented on being good.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Having access to things such as Google and YouTube made it allot easier to look into my relatively unknown genre as YouTube has allowed people on a lower budget bring their music videos to places w here they can be viewed by more than just the mass market which before was extremely hard music videos could only be found on the music channel.

Research with the computers made things allot easier, when looking into unknown genres, the web helps a lot as

Having access to all the different latest programs allowed me to make the most of my website using things like Dreamweaver, flash and fireworks all from adobe allowed me to move my work easily between the 3 and having a good basic knowledge of all the programs this helped me allot when developing my work using these to edit and create images that I would be able to use within my work rather than having to always take pictures or use other images I would be able to design them and make them personally giving me full control to do what I wanted with my work. I feel my use of the programs had improved, from a basic knowledge at the start to a good knowledge of use at the end, as I used the programs I became more familiar with what the programs could do. Such as the logo I used for Dubfiend, is an original image, that I created using the different tools of Fireworks, something I feel I couldn't have done before. And also creating a whole website using Dreamweaver was something I had not completed before only partly finished work. And having access to make a website with different codes already made for me made it a lot easier than if I had to find them myself, again advantages of having the latest programs to help me. If not it would have taken me much longer to develop the pictures I used, possibly making me use un original images and my website would not be as good and well developed if I didn't have the programs there to help me.

The main problem I had was finding a song I had contacted many different bands and didn't get any replies this left me struggling to find a artist to use luckily I was introduced to Fraser my artist now and he said I could use his work, however without meeting him having no replies was making it look lightly I would have no other song to do if Fraser didn't offer his music, also luckily I had a strong interest in the genre of music he was in allowing me to take a real personal interest in my work.

Being able to have access to good quality editing and producing programs has improved my work I feel, also being keen on ICT allowed me to show and use my skills in many different ways and to the best potential with the latest software to work with this gave me the best chance to get the best out of it and do my work to the best of my ability. Being able to tamper with all the different setting of the video editing not only the video but the sound with different effects allowed me to finish my work in black and white how I original wanted and create shots I didn't think possible to make. Using more than one camera angle from different pieces of footage. And also having the ability to speed up and slow down footage I had recorded helped me make my work fit the music that I had as often the tempo of the song changed, this was a positive point that I was given about my work that it fitted the genre and the song with the style and tempo.

Final Media piece

Website

URL: http://mediaa2.george-spencer.com/Website17/

I created my website after looking and analysising other sites such as Hellogoodbye and Jamie T's I found that i liked the style of Hellogoodbye's with a simple look with not much text on the website, I thought I would use this idea, and using Dreamweaver I created a slick look to my website with different links that would carry on into further infomation.

The use of a big logo I took from both websites as they both had large images at the top of their websites, I took this idea and developed it and worked my website around it.

My final product was a clean simple website that you dont have to scroll or zoom to view allowing the viewer to look at it easily, and with all the infomation on the different pages it keeps it looking clean.

Actors

Performance: Alex Pap

I chose Alex for this part because of his build and look. Even though you don't see Alex's face in the video, his build fitted what I was looking for; tall and stocky - this made it easy to film low shots. Moreover, Alex was keen and reasonably skilled using the DJ decks and mixer, allowing me to record him with him performing naturally.

Narrative: Tobias Wort

I picked Toby due to his stature and his look. Toby was playing the part of the conventional computer nerd. This character is often overweight, wearing glasses and with a poor complection. Toby, however, only wears glasses, breaking the stereotypical conventions of a computer nerd which is what I wanted to do.

Digi pack, Front & Back

Above: is the outside of the cover, the left being what would be shown as the cover when the book is folded, this is why is has the main dubfiend logo that is found throught the digi pack website and it also apears on the video, creating a cultural competence for people that can understand and recogonise the logo.

Below: Below is the inside of the digi pack which will fold out having the CD stored in the middle section, the colour scheme is kept the same, and the background is the same leaving the right hand side white, which will follow on to the reverse side. Also the use of the silhouette links in with the website keeping the same themes without.

Above: This is a simple mock up of what i want my website to look like, with just basic box's covering the areas i want to place text or images with a description in them to say what is needed there.

Above: This is my shot by shot view, looking at the different angles I will take the shots from and the different types of shot, such as 1) being a extreme close up from a low angle.

Above: This is a brainstorm into things such as costume, location, Props and who I want to act in my piece.

Filming Schedule & photos of brainstorms

These are my story boards, for my orignal idea for the idea, a lot of my ideas stayed the same but due to the different. I still used the extreme close ups on the ~DJ decks and however due to lack of avaliblilty and other boundaries some of the other shots, but i kept the rough ideas the same. Such as the opening frame which is the Dubfiend logo. Shots i had to get rid of where tracking shots and shots from the car as they simply didnt suit or look good with the rest of the video.

CD

Bloc Party, Intimacy, the album cover shows two people kissing or about to kiss on the cover, this is a very different album cover than normal bloc party albums, as their previous albums have all had photos of cities or wood on. This gives the buyer the impression that the album will be different to their previous two which it is, the image also ties in with the album name as obviously the people on the cover are intimate in what they are doing. The image cover could also show the passion that bloc party feel for their music, or intimacy might have been what has inspired them to create the album and there new sound of music.

Hoosiers
The hoosiers album 'trick to life' was cleverly made with the album cover coming out in 4 different colours, unable to select the colour you could buy it stores many people would then purchase more than one to try and get the different colours. The pictures on the front are all the same just different colours, a lot like that bad and the music the picture is humours and not serious, the music is simply there to be enjoyed by people that enjoy music.

Website Research

Hellogoodbye

Colour

The colour of the background is plain white which focus' your attention onto the centre where a poster like frame contains all the infomation, the main page is very simplistic almost like a interactive poster, they have a large photo of the band members.

Content

There is almost no content to the homepage as it is simply just a area to sign up, with a small picture of two t-shirts that can be brought on the website, the main content of the website is kept within the other pages past the homepage, its just a cover to the rest of the website.

Font

The fonts are all large and white, which makes them stand out from the blue background, the font is also serif and all in capitals. The text on the website that is directly talking to you, making you want to click on the links to get further into the website.

Layout

The layout is a lot like a poster, there is a simple rectangle in the middle with all the text and picture within, keeping it clean and simple, leaving all the text and infomation in the site just keeping the homepage looking stylish.

Jamie T

Colour

Jamie T has a plain colour scheme of grey and black with white text, however this makes the images of his album covers and titles stand out more drawing your attention into them.

Content

Jamie T has a lot of flash on his website with a large bar at the top allowing you to watch clips and listening to music, also there is infomation about everything to do with Jamie, from update from his blog to the sales of his new EP's and buying tickets for his latest gigs, the page unlike Hellogoodbyes is stylish and simple as well as having all the infomation on one easy to use page, where as with Hellogoodbye's you have to navigate through the site to find the infomation you want.

Layout

The use of coloums make the website look clean, and it also helps with its use and they have large titles making it easy to find your way around the site. The use of text with pictures works well and again having the block colour where infomation is makes it easy to use.

Font

The font on the website is very basic just a simple serif wont nothing fancy, just plain coloured text, white for normal text with green links and titles making them stand out again making the website user friendly and easy to find your way around and get to what you want.

The Dubstep target audience
Dubstep being as indie and underground as it is at hasn’t yet had chance to appeal to many people however the target audience could be large as this is the sort of music you would expect to find in your clubs around town and as many larger artists are now starting to get into dubstep the target audience will then also begin to start get bigger again as more sub genres will come out accommodating to more people making the target larger, however at the moment searching for good dubstep artists requires patience’s as you have to look through the internet or have good friends that make the music.

Dubstep is a new genre unlike rock and other genres that have been around for a long while and are very mainstream dubstep is very much an indie genre. It was created around 2000 in London, it was inspired and is allot like grime, drum and bass and electro. The reason the genre is so popular with indie artists is you need no instrumental talent don’t have to worry about space it can be created on a laptop or desktop computer with programs such as fruityloops’ which is just one of the popular programs used when making dubstep music. Dubstep is often a 2 step rhythm with a heavy baseline with around 140 beat per minute. Even though this genre is still very indie and underground you can find sites such as MySpace music full of dubstep artists, more recently dubstep has become bigger with artists such as JME and he has also featured some dubstep artists on his tracks such as Skream.

Due to dubstep being so new and indie they often do not have any high end videos to their music often they just have a picture shown for the time the song is on, this again comes down to funding and the reason people make dubstep is its cheap to make.
Dubstep has now grown and is now recognised outside of London and the UK, due to its dance like rhythms it can often be found to be played in clubs and the involvement of bigger name stars has helped boost dubstep to becoming a much bigger genre within music.
Dubstep also can be split into smaller sub genres as many people take the music in different direction turning them either into dance like tracks or more grime and rap style tracks. A popular theme within dubstep is to use already made beats or old songs and relay the beat allot like many of the newer dance tracks have a original 80-90’s song behind them. It will often use many pre recorded sounds. Typically a dubstep song will have a ‘mc’ or a singer that will lay vocals over the track; however there are many tracks that are just instrumentals.

Recently dubstep has become much bigger with artists such as 'Xzibit' and 'Snoop Dogg' both massive stars in the USA and 'Chase & Status' who are linked with other genres that are related to dubstep. 'Eastern Jam's' was a song that got the publicity and helped boost the knowledge of the genre in 2009.
Risk assessment
1. Equipment is set up correctly and doesn’t obstruct anything or anyone
2. Music will not be played too loud to disturb other or harm ears
3. The driver will not film while driving and they will also have to be able to drive legally

Props
Tom Fryer’s car
DJ decks and mixer
Speaker
Sub-woofer

Location
The locations I have picked to be used in the music video will be my own room as well as in Tom’s car. The different locations in Tom’s car will be the duration of the a-52 to Derby and the a-52 heading towards Bramcotte and this will all be shot from inside the car. My house. And a room within the school with a computer and white board for a scene with Toby and his laptop.

Permission
I Fraser Mills give Ben Cheatle permission to use my song in his media project.

Treatment
The video will be mainly based around performance and throughout the performance to stop boredom and repetition it will be broken up with abstract clips and images. Theses clips will mainly be clips of the car travelling from Nottingham to Derby, this clip will be edited to fit the baseline of the song. The images used will be of places along the way making sure that they also tie into the video, the video doesn’t really have a story to it, and the song just goes through the duration of the journey until the end. The song begins slowly so the video will also do so to match this, as we are waiting for the climax before the base drops we will focus on the mixer and the volume lights in the middle, as the bass drops the camera will switch to a medium shot of Tom’s back and the DJ set. As the song begins to progress the baseline speeds up this is when the clips will switch between the journey and the DJ mixer, this will make the video seem high tempo to match the song that its going with, when the beat slows down the video will also drop pace and the video will be shown in slow motion.

I did some research into how often and what people liked to see from their music video’s this would help me when I was looking into ideas to do for my music video to see what the majority of the people like, also to see which genres they preferred and how often they would watch the videos. The repeatability of the video is also very important the video cannot become boring.

Video Analysis

Hellogoodbye- Here in your arms

Hellogoodbye have gone for a unconventional video which goes away from the idea of making the star image, the band are seen to be ‘geeks’ and ‘social rejects’ rather than be worshiped by the girl in there video. As this video was the first major hit that came into the charts from the band this is where all there star image would have come from, this means that all the songs after this would just enhance the image that had already been started with them in the video for this song.

The band do not conform to the star theory that Dyer believes many bands and artists do, they are not a synthetic band to the conventional terms, they do not create a sense of rebelion or are only used for there good lucks, this is what Negus thought that synthetic bands do, unlike this Hellogoodbye give themselves a nerd look. They are not rebelious or the best looking group they base there image on innocence and niavity. This can be seen in the video with the usage of close ups at the start we see the lead singer tie the laces to his shoes and place sunglasses on his colar and a comb in his pocket, this portrays the niavity of the star and the image they are trying to put across. The use of a mid-shot on one of the other band memebers sitting on a bed whilst his friend is getting intimate with a girl next to him, showing the ‘geek’ and ‘social reject’ look towards the band. Dyer’s theory also said that a star must be ordinary yet extrodinary, for Hellogoodbye this is not the case as we feel like they are ordinary people and there is nothing special about them.

The editing used is very straigh cut and quick leaving nothing between all the different parts of the narative through out the video until the break down where the video follows the style of the music and slows down with longer clips before they cut, there is also a slow motion used. The main focus of the videos are on the girls that surposdly Hellogoodbye themselves cannot get, the video later shows that they do and can and its not all about the looks and being a synthetic boy band.
Andrew Goodwin says that different music genres have different kinds of music videos’ Hellogoodbye do not go along with this as such as the begining of the video doesnt show them as being cool or popular, however as the video goes through this becomes more apparent to as the girl begin to become interested in the members of the band, this however is not how most pop music videos go, the singer is the main focus of all the attention from the start.

The singer and the band in Hellogoodbye do not wear mainstream fashion in this video they are all dressed in short shorts and wear headbands and uncool glasses, however in doing so they create a trend that they themselves own. This has happened in other ways such as Calvin Harris' and Kanye West's sunglasses and Dappy’s from N-dubz hat, this will the associate people with the music they listen to and place them in social groups. Hebdidge called this the creation of subcultures.

The video goes with the theory of Stever Archer as it cuts often between the band performing and a narative to go along with the song creating the image, as well as showing the band performing.

The video makes you feel like part of the group/band again making them seem more ordinary than extrodinary.

Nickelback-Rockstar

Nickelback have made this video by getting clips of fans singing to there song, this is all performance with no narative to the song, this makes it simple as the editing is all straigh cut as every performer sings one line of the song, the only clips that are reapeated at the clips that are used during the chorus. The idea was originally done by Feeder they had the idea to have a video dedicated almost to all there fans and Nickelback have taken this idea and done there own spoof of it.
This means that band dont really appear in the video not creating a star image of them as only there fans are shown so Negus theory is irrelevant in this video, also Dyer’s theory on stars does not appear as the band cannot be seen there for they are not creating any real image for themselves otehr than the one they are hevily involved with there fans.

Nickelback are more of a organic band, this can be shown by the fact that they do not mind no featuring in their own videos and letting their fans appear they already have a image created as well from the many years they have already been playing, and without having them act in the video shows more on their concentration on music rather than their image like many boy bands that are synthetic. For those that are fans of Nickelback they will know that they are not synthetic as they never get carried away with the videos and are definitely not the most attractive band again showing that they are organic rather than synthetic in Negus’ theory.

The use of the fans in the video means that the band are made to look ordinary as well as extrodinary and close as well as distance as Dyer says, this makes us think we can become close to the band as some fans feature in a video, but then again as the band are not there is shows that they are not as close as we think. Dyer states that this is what makes fans buy a band's work as they are almost chasing and following the band trying to get close to them and that's what keeps them interested.
Steve Archer's theory doesn't work in this as the song has no narative so it is purely a performance by the people that have been recorded to do the clip.

Director Research

Akiva Schaffer is a member of a band that has recently hit the charts, ‘Lonely Island’, as well as being one third of this band he also alongside edits many ‘SNL Digital Shorts’ they specialise in comedic music which suits the genre of Lonely Island. He has also had a small acting role in a film called ‘Hot Rod’ which he also directed. Akiva has also got a co-writer role on the American ‘Saturday Night Live’ and has contributed many things to ‘Channel 101’. Not only does Akiva Schaffer direct many of the videos for his own band but he has worked with other bands such as ‘We Are Scientists’ and ‘Eagles of Death Metal’. All together he has directed 12 music videos these spread across all different genres from serious videos just joke and comedic ones. Akiva has also got a emmy-winning song to his name ‘Dick in a box’ preformed with Justin Timberlake, just one high profile celebrity that Akiva has worked with the song won the ‘Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics’. Akiva is well known for the comedic side of his career as many of his songs are parodies of other famous songs and are very often found humorous; he first really kicked off his career as part of Lonely Island on YouTube and the internet as a whole. This helped him become a well known face now working with many well known celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, T-pain and Jack Black are just a few to be mentioned. The work that Akiva proves that the internet has helped to create lots of stars and made it more accessible for everyone this is one thing I like about him as well as his good ability to be serious and have the ability to help bands such as ‘We Are Scientists’ create a good video to the song ‘The Great Escape’ while he also has the ability to make a funny video suitable for a very different audience and made for a different type of person making him very away of the audiences he is targeting made clear in his videos.

Richard Ayoade is a lot like Akiva as he has acted parts in films and is known for his comedy, however he has also written and directed a lot more than Akiva, he is most famous for his work towards the ‘IT Crowd’. Richard was also involved in ‘The Mighty Boosh’ which was a large well known TV program. Unlike Akiva the music videos that Richard has directed have all been for indie bands such as ‘Arctic Monkeys’, ‘The last of the shadow puppets’, ‘Vampire Weekend’ and ‘Yeah yeah yeahs’ these videos are all rather serious and suit the songs they go to well, they are all very different ranging from ‘fluorescent adolescent’ a song about sexual tales of youth compared to ‘Vlad the impaler’ his latest work with ‘Kasabian’ which has a very different sound and meaning to it, showing the versatility and understanding Richard has of the music, this is needed as often his videos are more narrative than they are of the band performing. The different directors are very different in the way there videos go Richard has mainly narrative, the videos go along with the song with very little of the bands singing and performing, where as Akiva as well as them acting to the song they sing throughout the videos.
